Veva H. Zimmerman, the oldest sister of Henry Hampton and Judi Hampton, followed in their father's footsteps by entering the medical profession.  She was one of the few black women of her time to attend medical school, and throughout her ensuing career she served as a mentor and role model for minority women in medicine.

Dr. Zimmerman was a professor of clinical psychiatry at New York University, in addition to having a private practice. In 1981 she was appointed associate dean of the New York University School of Medicine, where she was the first black and the first woman to become dean at the school in its 140 year history.

Veva Zimmerman is married to David Zimmerman, a science writer, and has two sons:  Jacob Zimmerman, a computer programmer, and Tobias Zimmerman, an attorney. She is the proud grandmother of two little boys and now lives in Vermont, where she has a private practice in psychiatry.
